COMMUNITY PROJECT AT TEATRO DEL LAGO CHILE_ REGION DE LOS LAGOS_ 2021

[ENG] "El Local" (The Locals) is a project I developed in collaboration with Teatro del Lago (Frutillar, Chile), who invited me to create a work that could help rebuild the connection between the community and this cultural space in the aftermath of the pandemic.

I worked alongside several local institutions; including Kopernikus Lab, Mediando Los Lagos, the Frutillar Public Library, the Places Foundation, and five public and private schools, to create a participatory project that honored the city’s intangible heritage and the people who live there.

The result was a playful and open-ended intervention that asked the town itself to give meaning to the piece. We installed six public telephones in key spots throughout Frutillar,  from shopping areas to cultural centers,  where people could answer daily questions that played when they picked up the phone.. These questions invited them to reflect on identity, memory, and community. Through this, we gathered over 400 voice messages in just 30 days, using oral storytelling as a way to build a living archive of the city’s collective memory.

The project has two parts: the first was the public phone installation and message collection. The second is a publication, currently in development, in the form of a newspaper. It will bring together reflections from the collected messages, along with over 300 drawings and headlines I created together with students from local schools, including Kopernikus School, Lichaf, Linares de Casma, and Ignacio Carrera Pinto.

[ESP] El Local es un proyecto que realicé en una residencia de 5 semanas con Teatro del Lago. En esta, la institución me invita a pensar una obra que contribuyera a fortalecer el vínculo entre la comunidad y este espacio cultural, post pandemia.

La experiencia ofrecida buscó valorar el patrimonio inmaterial de Frutillar y su gente, a través de una intervención participativa que invitaba usar el relato oral para crear un archivo que registrara la memoria colectiva e histórica de la zona. Para esto, se instalaron seis teléfonos públicos en los centros comerciales más representativos de Frutillar, los cuales invitaban a la gente a levantar el auricular, escuchar una pregunta y dejar su respuesta o reflexion a través de un sistema de grabación que estaba incorporado al teléfono. 

El proyecto tuvo dos etapas: la primera fue la instalación de los teléfonos, que en 30 días reunió más de 400 mensajes sobre temas como naturaleza, política, música, educación, religión, migración, folclore y arte, entre otros. La segunda etapa, aun en espera de financiamiento, es la publicación del material audio recopilado, al que se le suma más de 300 dibujos y titulares que realizamos en colaboración con estudiantes de escuelas locales.
